Natural Yellow Diamonds

Discover the Radiant Beauty of Yellow Diamonds in Milwaukee

Step into the exclusive world of fancy colored diamonds, where the traditional idea that diamonds must be colorless is beautifully reimagined. Among these rare treasures, none shine quite like the yellow diamond—often called the canary diamond for its vibrant, sunny hue.

At Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers, we’re proud to bring this captivating gemstone to Milwaukee and Whitefish Bay, offering an extraordinary collection of yellow diamond engagement rings and fine jewelry.

What Makes Yellow Diamonds Unique?

In comic book lore, Superman famously compresses a lump of coal into a diamond. While both coal and diamonds share a carbon base, true diamonds form deep within the Earth under intense heat and pressure—not from coal.

So what gives a diamond its golden glow? The secret is nitrogen. When nitrogen atoms enter a diamond’s crystal structure, they absorb blue light and reflect yellow. The higher the nitrogen content, the richer and deeper the color.

Interestingly, while nitrogen is considered an “impurity” in white diamonds, it’s the very element that gives yellow diamonds their signature warmth and brilliance. Some may even show subtle secondary hues of orange or brown, adding depth and individuality to each stone.

How Yellow Diamonds Are Graded

Unlike traditional white diamonds, graded on a D–Z color scale, fancy colored diamonds—including yellow diamonds—are evaluated based on color intensity and saturation.

As Diamonds Pro explains:

“If the white diamond color scale [D–Z] were to continue past Z—all the way to a rich, yellow color—you’d have a Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond.”

This means the most desirable Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamonds are fully saturated in color, without traces of whiteness.

Yellow Diamond Color Grading Scale:
Faint → Very Light → Light → Fancy Light → Fancy → Fancy Intense → Fancy Vivid / Deep / Dark

How Rare Are Yellow Diamonds?

Natural colored diamonds are exceptionally rare—only about one in every 10,000 carats mined is naturally colored. Of those, around 60% are yellow diamonds, making them the most common among fancy colors yet still a remarkable rarity overall.

Their cheerful hue and limited availability make them a favorite for collectors and those seeking a truly distinctive yellow diamond engagement ring.
